Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre Launches First Summer Company Program

Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre Launches First Summer Company Program

Peterborough, ON – March 10, 2025 – The 2025 Summer Company Program is now accepting applications, offering students the tools, guidance, and funding needed to transform their business ideas into reality. This program empowers youth to explore entrepreneurship and develop the skills to succeed in today’s fast-paced economy. Applications are open until May 16, 2025.

Six successful applicants will gain access to expert mentoring, valuable resources, and financial support, including a grant of up to $3,000 to kickstart their small business. The program provides an unparalleled opportunity for participants to build critical entrepreneurial skills while running their own businesses during the summer months.

“This program is about empowering young people with the confidence, resources, and connections they need to turn their ideas into reality,” said Devon Girard, Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough. “The support provided ensures participants are equipped with the tools to succeed and create a strong foundation for their future.”

Entrepreneurial skills are more important than ever in today’s rapidly changing economy. According to a recent report by Statistics Canada, over 20% of young Canadians aged 18-24 have expressed an interest in starting their own business, yet many cite a lack of resources, mentorship, and funding as barriers to entry. Programs like Summer Company play a critical role in addressing these challenges, equipping participants with essential skills like problem-solving, financial literacy, and marketing expertise. These competencies not only help young entrepreneurs launch successful businesses but also prepare them to adapt and thrive in any career they pursue.

The program offers a small, close-knit group of students the chance to receive personalized, one-on-one guidance and mentorship from an experienced advisor with extensive expertise in the entrepreneurial space.

Applicants must be between 15 and 29 years old, returning to school in the fall of 2025, or hold full-time employment during the program.

The Summer Company Program has a proven track record of success, having supported hundreds of young entrepreneurs across Ontario. Past participants have created diverse businesses in fields like technology, creative arts, food services, and retail.

“This is an exciting opportunity for young people to explore entrepreneurship at an early stage,” said Rose Terry, Business Advisory Centre Manager. “By giving students the tools, funding, and mentorship they need to create their own jobs, we’re not just helping them succeed for one summer—we’re empowering them to have the confidence to pursue entrepreneurship as a viable career path.   Many participants catch the ‘entrepreneurship bug’ and go on to become business leaders and changemakers in their communities. It’s amazing to see how this program sparks creativity in young minds.”

Applications are open now through May 16, 2025. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit www.cfpeterborough.ca for full program details and the online application form. For additional information, contact Lindsey Irwin at lindsey@cfpeterborough.ca.

Experts to Lead Panel Event for Businesses on Future-Proofing Your Business Against U.S. Tariffs

Experts to Lead Panel Event for Businesses on Future-Proofing Your Business Against U.S. Tariffs

Peterborough, ON – February 13, 2025 – Business owners across Peterborough City and County are invited to attend Bridging the Divide: Future-Proofing Your Business Against U.S. Tariffs, a free event designed to help local businesses navigate the challenges posed by shifting trade policies. Hosted by Community Futures Peterborough, the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, and the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Association, this event will provide expert insights into supply chain management, finance, and trade strategies.

On Tuesday, March 4, at Market Hall in Peterborough, the event will open its doors at 8:00 AM, allowing attendees to network over food and drinks before programming begins at 8:30 AM. The panel discussion will focus on the impact of U.S. tariffs, changes in consumer buying habits, and effective strategies for businesses to mitigate risks and adapt to new trade realities.

“The impact of U.S. tariffs is being felt across our region, and business owners are facing new challenges that require immediate attention,” says Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough, Devon Girard. “We recognized the urgency of this issue and felt it was essential to bring together experts in trade, supply chain management, and finance to provide actionable insights. This panel is a direct response to the concerns we’ve heard from local businesses, and we’re committed to equipping them with the knowledge and strategies they need to navigate these changes successfully.”

The event will begin with opening remarks from Devon Girard of Community Futures Peterborough, Joel Wiebe of the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, and County of Peterborough Warden Bonnie Clark. A panel will feature industry experts including Bob Armstrong, President of Armstrong Trade and Logistics Advisory Services, Andrea Parkes, Professor of Supply Chain at Fleming College, and Sherry Hill, CFO of Peterboro Matboards and Secretary of the Kawartha Manufacturers Association.

Keynote speaker, Bob Armstrong, CITP, FCILT, President of Armstrong Trade and Logistics Advisory Services Inc. (ATLAS) brings unparalleled expertise to the region. He has more than 50 years of experience in Global Supply Chain, International Trade, Cross-Border Logistics, and Customs Regulations, and has led numerous global trade missions. He previously served as President of the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Canada, President and CEO of the Canadian Association of Importers and Exporters Inc., and President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC). His extensive experience includes helping Canadian businesses find new suppliers and customers while ensuring cost-effective, efficient, and resilient supply chain operations in global markets.

“Canada’s supply chains are critical to our country’s economic success but are under constant upheaval due to the complexity of the supply chain, consumers changing purchasing habits, government interventions, wars and labour shortages,” says Armstrong. “Our largest trade flows are South-North-South with our largest trading partner the USA. Will we see a new, larger flow of goods across Canada east to west, west to east as Canadians trade more with each other? Will Canada increase its exports and imports with the Far East and the EU? That can change supply chain patterns too,” he added.

Throughout the discussion, panelists will explore key topics such as how tariffs are disrupting supply chains, strategies for diversifying suppliers, the impact of trade barriers on local businesses, and new market opportunities for Canadian exporters. Local business owners will also share firsthand experiences on how tariffs are affecting their operations and what steps they are taking to adapt in our rapidly changing environment.

“Our local economy is disrupted,” says Joel Wiebe, Vice President, Government Relations and Operations at the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce. “Peterborough sells more than $580 million in goods to the US and businesses here rely on American companies for the goods and materials they produce and sell. This is an opportunity to address the risks in our supply chain.”

The conversation will examine how Canadian businesses can effectively engage with policymakers, the role of contract clauses in tariff agreements, and how to successfully build supplier relationships in today’s rapidly changing trade environment.  Registration for the event can be found on www.cfpeterborough.ca

PETERBOROUGH, ON – September 17, 2024 – A dynamic group of entrepreneurs committed to growing their operations in our community have successfully completed the 2024 ScaleUP program. This initiative, delivered in collaboration between Community Futures Peterborough and Scotiabank, has equipped these local business leaders with the strategic insights and tools necessary for accelerated growth.

“This dedicated group of ambitious business owners is now equipped with a customized expansion plan to grow and scale their operations,” says Devon Girard, Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough. “We couldn’t be prouder to support their business journey, and we’re thrilled to see their sustainable growth plans put into action.”

The 2024 ScaleUP program was designed to address the evolving needs of regional entrepreneurs with the strategic tools required to make key decisions about how their business can scale. This year’s cohort marked the second year of the partnership between Community Futures Peterborough and Scotiabank, with a shared commitment to serve local business owners looking to scale their operations.

“Scotiabank offers our heartfelt congratulations to the graduates of the ScaleUP program. The support this program offers to participants is aligned to the tailored advice we deliver to our clients as they look to grow and expand their business. Each of today’s graduates is walking away with a customized growth plan, built for sustainable expansion of their business.

“Congratulations to the ScaleUP program graduates! Your hard work and dedication reflect your unwavering commitment to both your business and your community. Our government recognizes the value of rural economies and that is why we invested an additional $40 million into the 36 CFDCs so they can provide valuable programs, tools and resources to help rural businesses and entrepreneurs thrive,” says the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

Scaling programs are crucial for businesses in the region as they provide the resources, mentorship, and strategic guidance needed to expand beyond their initial stages and achieve sustainable growth. ScaleUP is an essential piece of the regional ecosystem as it contributes to the regional economy by creating jobs, attracting investment, and making the community more vibrant and competitive.

Background:  Barking Pixel Design is a creative services studio offering brand, design, and marketing solutions for print, web, and signage applications. Their team consists of Kerry Brennan and Clint Clarke, professional graphic designers each with 25+ years of experience respectively in the creative industry.

They work primarily with small and medium-sized businesses within Peterborough & The Kawarthas and throughout Southern Ontario. They work on behalf of their clients ensuring their visual communications, messages, and images meet the highest creative and production standards possible.

In addition to setting 5 key goals in their action plan, they also reflected on their skills and identified opportunities to redefine core roles.

Quote: “Start with a bookkeeper early, to ensure you stay on track with billing and taxes, as well as utilizing tools such as Quickbooks.” Clink Clarke, Barking Pixel Design Co.

Jacob Rodenburg, Camp Kawartha

Background: Camp Kawartha has been providing innovative outdoor and environmental experiences for children and youth for over 100 years. Through award-winning programs, strategic partnerships, and hands-on demonstrations of sustainable living, Camp Kawartha inspires environmental stewardship regionally, provincially, and internationally

Executive Director, Jacob Rodenburg’s goal is to be fully booked all year round, with every available date occupied by campers, students, and visitors.  The extra business income would allow the organization to expand its reach, provide employees with a better wage, and enable them to upgrade their facilities to showcase additional sustainable features.

During the ScaleUP program, Jacob’s understanding of the importance of buy-in from all of the staff on the organization’s mission, vision, and future goals grew, and also asked for input from the employees in shaping their future.

Quote: “It is easy to become ensconced in our daily routines and continue to default to conventional ways of doing business.  [ScaleUP] is a wonderful opportunity to take a higher-level view to rethink and recalibrate priorities and align them with market opportunities,” Jacob Rodenburg, Camp Kawartha.

Sean Flanagan, Flanagan and Sun

Background: Flanagan and Sun Inc. is a solar renewable energy business located in Buckhorn and has been operating in the community for over 20 years. The owner, Sean Flanagan, a certified photovoltaic technician, is passionate about the environment and making the world a better place.

One key business goal for Flanagan and Sun Inc is to increase revenues by 10 to 15% by growing their portfolio of commercial solar installations. To facilitate this growth they have hired two new key personnel.  A key skill Sean refined during the program was being sensitive to the needs of his employees and working hard to ensure they are comfortable in their roles and contributing to the business in a meaningful and rewarding way.

Quote: “One of the most important skills I have from a business perspective is my resiliency; I can push forward despite obstacles that may be presented to the business,” Sean Flanagan, Flanagan and Sun.

Debra Ragbar, Kawartha Spice Co.

Background: Kawartha Spice Company Inc. manufactures spice blends and seasonings in Peterborough.  All spices and herbs are non-GMO, vegan, and selected for their premium value.  Each blend is gluten-free, and salt-free, and is carefully developed to ensure consumers have enjoyable, healthy, and easy-to-prepare meals.

Under the guidance of Diane Richard, Debra was able to implement a very workable 3-year business plan to successfully take Kawartha Spice Co. to the next level.  She has every confidence that she will be able to use [this plan] for future growth.  In addition, this program offered her key insights into ways she can increase revenues while at the same time lowering production costs.

Quote: “There is no need to compromise on sales – there are alternatives that I can implement to generate new sales,” says Debra Ragbar.

Tracy Cosburn, Kyoto Coffee

Background: Kyoto Coffee is a local company focusing on procuring, roasting, grinding, and selling premium coffee bean varieties.  Kyoto Coffee carries a large selection of premium beans that have been carefully selected for their flavour profile, their organic and environmental credentials as well as their social footprint.  This combination has been at the core of the success of the business for the past 20 years.

With the learnings from the ScaleUP program, Tracy was able to develop and implement a business plan for how she could streamline her sales and distribution channels transitioning to primarily wholesale.

Quote: “Going through this program gave me a reason not to look at all the competitive and financial pressures of being an entrepreneur.  I remembered why I am so passionate about what I do,” says Tracy Cosburn, Kyoto Coffee.

Alicia Doris, Living Local Marketplace

Background: From its storefront on Chemong Road in Peterborough and through corporate gifting, Living Local shares the work of artisans and small businesses from as close to home as possible.  They highlight and strive to support entrepreneurs and their families in Kawarthas-Northumberland and across Ontario. They offer completely customized gift baskets and boxes in-store and online and love sharing stories about the people behind the products.

One of Alicia’s key business goals entering this program was how to expand and grow her business.  She was unclear on what approach to take, and what infrastructure to implement to support her growth.  Through the courses and 1:1 sessions, she learned to take a balanced approach and refined her financial acumen.

Quote: “Starting this program with an “I don’t know what I don’t know” approach, allowed me to ask important questions and be open to working on facets of the business that I didn’t even know existed,” says Alicia Doris, Living Local Marketplace.

As the owner of the successful social enterprise Old Jar Candle Co., Lindsey brings a wealth of practical knowledge, advisory expertise, and experience as a creativity coach and innovation specialist to the role.

The Business Advisory Centre is one of the few of its kind that offers a comprehensive suite of services, combining access to grants, microloans, top-tier advisors, and specialized programs to support business growth, scaling, and even selling. This unique blend of resources and expertise makes it an invaluable hub for entrepreneurs and small business owners looking to succeed in today’s dynamic market.

This Centre is not just a resource for entrepreneurs; it’s a catalyst for economic growth across our entire region.”

Community Futures Peterborough announced in June it would be assuming operations of the Business Advisory Centre, providing small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs access to funding and advisory services all in one place. The BAC, a part of the Small Business Enterprise Centre program, funded by the Province of Ontario through the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, was previously operated by Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED).

“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and the launch of the new home for the Business Advisory Centre will ensure that entrepreneurs continue receiving crucial support and resources to help Peterborough-Kawartha’s community small businesses thrive and grow,” said Dave Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha.

To celebrate the launch, the Business Advisory Centre held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open its doors and provide the community with the opportunity to tour the new home of the BAC and meet its expert advisors. Terry and Irwin have been collaborating closely with the Community Futures team to revamp the Business Advisory Centre’s offerings, ensuring they meet the needs of today’s modern businesses in the city and county. The Centre will provide a wide range of services, including mentorship, expert consultations, advisory, grant programs, confidence coaching, workshops, masterminds, and networking events, catering to businesses at all stages of growth, from early-stage startups to scaling enterprises.

“Successful small businesses are a crucial part of our economy and essential to the fabric of our community. I’m thrilled that our local businesses and entrepreneurs will be able to access the support they need through the revamped Business Advisory Centre,” says Jeff Leal, Mayor of Peterborough. “I want to thank Community Futures Peterborough for assembling such an experienced and talented team of Rosalea Terry and Lindsey Irwin to ensure that this important service continues.”

“Businesses and entrepreneurs in Peterborough County are in good hands with the newly revamped Business Advisory Centre. We are proudly leveraging local talents Rosalea Terry and Lindsey Irwin to run the new BAC. I am optimistic about the future of entrepreneurship and business development in Peterborough County and City. We look forward to our partnership with CFDC-BAC to share space in Lakefield and other locations in Peterborough County to expand services in all of our communities. Thank you to Community Futures Peterborough for your leadership and partnership in this venture.”
