Peterborough, ON – September 3, 2025 – The Business Advisory Centre and Community Futures Peterborough are excited to announce the return of the increasingly popular Entrepreneurship 101workshop series this fall, with the addition of three new and exciting free workshops. This seven-part program is designed to give business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs the skills, tools, and confidence to transform their ideas into thriving business ventures.

The series will guide participants through the essentials of starting and growing a business, from developing and validating ideas to building strong brands, securing funding, managing finances, protecting intellectual property, and making smart hiring decisions.

The Entrepreneurship 101 series is designed for anyone with an interest in starting or growing a business. Each workshop combines expert-led instruction with hands-on learning, ensuring participants leave with practical strategies and valuable insights they can apply immediately, whether they’re still exploring ideas, refining an early concept, or already running a business.

Business services delivered by Community Futures Peterborough show a growing and strong demand for advisory services and lending options to start or grow a business locally. In the past four months, staff at the Business Advisory Centre have already held more than 200 one-on-one, in-depth business consultations with entrepreneurs or those exploring entrepreneurship in our region. Initiatives like the Entrepreneurship 101 series support the work of Community Futures Peterborough by providing front-line, tailored advisory services and practical workshops for every stage of the business journey.

PETERBOROUGH, ON – On August 13, 2025, the Business Advisory Centre (BAC) at Community Futures Peterborough (CFP) brought together community partners, mentors, and local leaders to celebrate the drive, creativity, and achievements of six aspiring young entrepreneurs. These students have spent their summer launching and running their businesses as part of the Government of Ontario’s Summer Company program.

The Summer Company program provides an opportunity for students aged 15 to 29 years old to take a business idea and bring it to life, with the guidance, funding, and encouragement they need to succeed. In addition to receiving up to $3,000 in grant funding, they have also received expert training and ongoing mentorship from CFP staff to help them navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship. Along the way, these young entrepreneurs gained skills in problem-solving, financial management, customer service, and resilience – skills that extend far beyond the summer months.

“The Summer Company Program is igniting fresh ideas and building tomorrow’s businesses right here in Peterborough,” says Dave Smith, MPP for Peterborough–Kawartha. “With our government’s support and expert advice from the Community Futures Peterborough team, these young entrepreneurs get the funding, mentorship, and skills they need to hit the ground running—and their success fuels a stronger, more dynamic local economy.”

They have learned to manage budgets, attract customers, deliver high-quality products and services, and adapt to unexpected challenges. For many, this is the first time they have been solely responsible for the success of a business, and the experience has been transformative.

Today’s celebration recognized the dedication and progress the students made over the summer. Community leaders, including Community Futures Executive Director Devon Girard, Director of Economic Development for the City of Peterborough, Daryll Julott, Peterborough County’s General Manager of Economic Development, Rhonda Keenan, Peterborough County’s Manager of Community Development, Sarah Budd, Peterborough – Kawartha Chamber of Commerce Vice President Joel Wiebe, and the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area’s Executive Director, Nour Mazloum, all spoke to celebrate the program graduates on the value of youth entrepreneurship and celebrated their commitment to starting a business.

June 26, 2025 – Peterborough, ON – Community Futures Peterborough (CFP) celebrated a major milestone today, 40 years of service and impact, during its Annual General Meeting held at its client, the scenic Farmhill Weddings in Keene. Surrounded by business leaders, elected officials, board members, entrepreneurs, and community partners, the organization celebrated four decades of empowering local businesses in the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County.

“Forty years of Community Futures Peterborough means 40 years of believing in entrepreneurs, fueling businesses, and strengthening our regional economy,” says Devon Girard, executive director of Community Futures Peterborough. “We’ve played a key role in helping thousands of local businesses start, grow, and thrive, and today, we are so proud to honour that legacy.”

During the event, Community Futures Peterborough announced it had received a record $4.6 million in loan applications in fiscal year 2024- 2025 and disbursed more than $1.38M to 26 local companies. Those new loans created or maintained more than 330 local jobs during their 2024-2025 fiscal year. Community Futures Peterborough is funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

Today’s AGM paid tribute to several previous Board Chairs, including founding Board Directors George Gillespie and Doug Armstrong. It also featured a heartfelt tribute to the organization’s late executive director, Judy Heffernan, who was remembered for her contributions with a special video during the proceedings.

The event also provided a snapshot of the results from Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre, which, during its first six months of delivering the Small Business Enterprise Centre Program, provided more than 200 in-depth consultations to small businesses in our community.

Peterborough, ON – June 18, 2025 – Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre is excited to announce the launch of their first ever Summer Company Program, a signature initiative of the Government of Ontario that supports the entrepreneurial aspirations of youth aged 15 to 29. Each year, the program provides eligible young people with up to $3,000 in grant funding to start and operate a business over the summer months. In addition to funding, participants benefit from comprehensive business training, expert advice, and personalized mentorship to help turn their ideas into real-world enterprises.

This year’s intake saw a record number of applications from across the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County, a clear indication of the growing momentum for youth entrepreneurship in the region. From this highly competitive pool, six standout young entrepreneurs have been selected to receive funding and mentorship through the program.

This summer’s participants are Lauren Connolly, Teaghan Hartnett, Haydon Meade, Neha Mervin, Bisma Razaque, and Spencer Toth.

“I love seeing kids grow in their swimming skills and confidence,” said Lauren Connolly, founder of Connolly Swim Academy who hopes to help kids build confidence in the water. “I am really excited to make my business the best it can be for my clients.”

The diverse range of businesses in this group showcases creativity, passion, and entrepreneurial spirit. From a swimming instructor focused on building life-saving skills and confidence in the water, to vibrant Bollywood dance classes that celebrate culture and movement and a custom apparel shop, each business brings something unique to the community. Window washing and landscaping services offer practical support to homeowners and businesses alike, while farm support provides essential help to local agriculture, ensuring our food systems remain strong. Together, these businesses reflect a wide spectrum of industries each making a meaningful impact in its own way.

Youth entrepreneurship is on the rise across the province and the country. In Ontario, young people under the age of 30 now make up nearly 12 percent of all self-employed individuals, according to recent provincial labour statistics. Nationally, more than half of young Canadians have considered launching a business at some point, highlighting an appetite for independence and impact. A recent study by the Business Development Bank of Canada also revealed that strong mentorship and thorough business planning are two of the most critical success factors for new entrepreneurs, both of which are central pillars of the Summer Company experience.

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Community Futures Peterborough marked the milestone by committing a record-breaking investment of $100,000 to 10 organizations in our region. To honour four decades of supporting local businesses, CFP distributed $10,000 in non-repayable funds to each successful applicant through the 2025 Community Advancement Program, resulting in a total investment of $100,000. This special anniversary initiative underscores CFP’s longstanding dedication to fostering resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities throughout the region.

“The projects supported through the Community Advancement Program are a testament to the innovation, ambition, and local leadership driving economic growth in Peterborough and the surrounding region,” said the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario. “Through FedDev Ontario, our government is proud to support the Community Futures Program and invest in the people and organizations creating real momentum. Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Foundation will be using the funds to support a bursary initiative designed to uplift children who were involved with Children’s Aid in achieving their post-secondary education goals.

“We are so grateful for the funds Community Futures Peterborough is providing to the Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Foundation through the 2025 Community Advancement Program,” said executive director Carrie Truman. “Together, we are having a positive impact on the lives of youth who are connected to the Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Aid Society and pursuing their post-secondary education goals. It is amazing the hurdles these youth have overcome, and so exciting that they are focused on their future by working towards achieving their education goals.”

Farms at Work will be using funding from the Community Advancement Program to hire a project manager to launch and support their Community Farm. This initiative will provide hands-on, experiential education to aspiring entrepreneurs in agriculture through workshops and guided tours of established farms.

“Farms at Work is grateful to receive this Community Advancement Program funding to support planning of our long-envisioned Community Learning Farm. These funds, along with in-kind support from the Peterborough County Economic Development team and farm owner Jason McIntosh, bring the dream of a place to farm closer for aspiring farmers and will benefit the community for many years to come,” said Heather Thoma, operations manager for Farms at Work. “We welcome community participation – whether as volunteers, food growers looking for land and educational support, or benefactors.”

The New Canadians Centre will use the funding to advance the goals of the Workplace Inclusion Charter, which include fostering a welcoming and inclusive community, supporting employee attraction and retention, boosting productivity and innovation, and enhancing overall employee well-being.

“Immigration is a key component of the future of our labour force and working age population,” said Andy Cragg, executive director of NCC. “The Workplace Inclusion Charter project will help participating local businesses attract and retain immigrant talent while fostering positive workplace experiences for newcomers.”

Over the coming months, participants will refine their business strategies, enhance their marketing, and gain vital skills for sustainable growth. The Starter Company Plus Program is a province-wide initiative funded by the Government of Ontario and provides successful graduates of the program access to a total of $89,000 in grant dollars to start and grow their business.

Peterborough, ON — April 17, 2025 — Community Futures Peterborough, in collaboration with the County of Peterborough, is proud to announce the launch of the first-ever Entrepreneurship 101 workshop series this spring to be held exclusively in the County of Peterborough. Tailored for aspiring, new, and existing business owners, this four-part series will bring essential small business education in person to rural communities in the County of Peterborough.

“Rural entrepreneurs are the backbone of our local economy, but they often face unique challenges when it comes to accessing in-person resources and support,” says Devon Girard, Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough. “By bringing Entrepreneurship 101 directly to communities across the County of Peterborough, we’re making it easier for business owners to gain the knowledge and connections they need to succeed — right in their own backyard.”

With workshops scheduled in Millbrook, Havelock, Selwyn, and Norwood throughout May and June, participants will gain practical knowledge on critical topics including business planning, branding, and marketing, cash flow management, and how to access financial support. This hands-on series is designed to empower rural entrepreneurs with tools and insights to start, sustain, and grow their businesses right in their communities.

Recent data highlights the importance of initiatives like this as nearly 28% of all Canadian small businesses are in rural areas, yet rural entrepreneurs report greater barriers to financing, mentorship, and market access compared to their urban counterparts. Programs that reduce travel time and build local networks are crucial for their success.

“I’m excited to bring this kind of support closer to rural entrepreneurs,” said Rose Terry, Manager of the Business Advisory Centre and Corporate Communications. “We’re helping to reduce barriers and build stronger local networks where entrepreneurs can grow and support each other.”

The Entrepreneurship 101 series welcomes participants from all stages of business and will feature interactive sessions led by experienced business advisors. Peterborough, ON – April 9, 2025 – In response to the ongoing trade challenges posed by United States tariffs, Community Futures Peterborough, in collaboration with the Business Advisory Centre, the City of Peterborough, the County of Peterborough, the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA), and Peterborough + the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, has launched the Tariff Toolkit—a strategic resource to support businesses in our community.

The evolving trade landscape between Canada and the United States has created uncertainty for local businesses. With tariffs and counter-tariffs shifting frequently, businesses need actionable strategies to navigate these challenges effectively. On March 4, Community Futures Peterborough and its partners came together at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre to connect businesses with industry experts who provided initial guidance on minimizing the impact of tariffs. While the specifics of the tariffs may change, the need for businesses to rethink their approach to trade remains constant.

“We have always been mindful of not only the direct impacts tariffs themselves have on businesses but also tariff speculation and lasting change in consumer buying patterns. Those are the effects our area businesses are feeling right now”, says Devon Girard, executive director of Community Futures Peterborough.

“Businesses have the opportunity to thrive when the marketplace is stable and predictable.  The unpredictability thrust on the global market by the Republican Administration in the United States has placed us in an unstable situation that is difficult for any industry to navigate.  Initiatives like the Tariff Toolkit from Community Futures provide our local job creators with some tools to help them navigate this uncertain time and find ways to better position themselves to have the resilience needed to successfully navigate the choppy waters and come out stronger,” said Dave Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament, Peterborough – Kawartha.

The Tariff Toolkit is designed as a practical resource to help businesses assess their current trade strategies and explore new opportunities. This guide offers insights and actionable steps that businesses can work on with their advisors to develop a resilient approach to international trade.

Starter Company Plus Now Accepting Applications to Help Entrepreneurs Launch and Grow Their Businesses

Peterborough, ON – March 19, 2025 – The Business Advisory Centre is thrilled to announce that applications are now open for the upcoming cohort of Starter Company Plus. This highly sought-after program offers entrepreneurs the essential tools, mentorship, and funding to take their businesses to the next level. The deadline to apply is April 2, 2025, at 11:59 PM.

“Starter Company Plus is more than just a program—it’s a transformative experience that reshapes the trajectory of the entrepreneur’s journey,” said Rosalea Terry, Business Advisory Centre Manager. “By combining expert-led programming, valuable connections, a supportive cohort of like-minded individuals, and funding opportunities, we empower entrepreneurs with the resources they need to build and scale their businesses with confidence. This program is about more than financial support; it’s about equipping business owners with the tools, knowledge, and network to create lasting success.”

Participants will receive personalized guidance from a seasoned business advisor who will help refine their strategies, build strong financial foundations, and develop effective marketing campaigns. The program also provides valuable networking opportunities, connecting entrepreneurs with experienced mentors and like-minded peers who have successfully started, expanded, or acquired small businesses.

Participants in the program will also benefit from additional resources designed to support their long-term success. Each entrepreneur will receive a six-month trial membership with the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, providing them with valuable networking opportunities, business advocacy, and access to exclusive events. Additionally, they will have access to a conditionally pre-approved microloan from Community Futures Peterborough, offering financial support to help fuel business growth. These benefits further enhance the program’s impact, ensuring participants have the connections and capital they need to thrive.

Eligible applicants must be 18 years or older, based in the City or County of Peterborough, and ready to either launch a new business or expand an existing one.
