Community Futures Peterborough Marks 40 Years of Fueling Local Business Success

June 26, 2025 – Peterborough, ON – Community Futures Peterborough (CFP) celebrated a major milestone today, 40 years of service and impact, during its Annual General Meeting held at its client, the scenic Farmhill Weddings in Keene. Surrounded by business leaders, elected officials, board members, entrepreneurs, and community partners, the organization celebrated four decades of empowering local businesses in the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County.

“Forty years of Community Futures Peterborough means 40 years of believing in entrepreneurs, fueling businesses, and strengthening our regional economy,” says Devon Girard, executive director of Community Futures Peterborough. “We’ve played a key role in helping thousands of local businesses start, grow, and thrive, and today, we are so proud to honour that legacy.”

During the event, Community Futures Peterborough announced it had received a record $4.6 million in loan applications in fiscal year 2024- 2025 and disbursed more than $1.38M to 26 local companies. Those new loans created or maintained more than 330 local jobs during their 2024-2025 fiscal year. Community Futures Peterborough is funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

“For four decades, Community Futures Peterborough has been a driving force behind rural business growth—supporting bold entrepreneurs, creating local jobs and strengthening the region’s economy. Through FedDev Ontario, the Government of Canada is proud to invest in this legacy of rural leadership and innovation. These results speak for themselves: when we back rural communities with the right tools, they build the future,” said the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

Today’s AGM paid tribute to several previous Board Chairs, including founding Board Directors George Gillespie and Doug Armstrong. It also featured a heartfelt tribute to the organization’s late executive director, Judy Heffernan, who was remembered for her contributions with a special video during the proceedings.

The event also provided a snapshot of the results from Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre, which, during its first six months of delivering the Small Business Enterprise Centre Program, provided more than 200 in-depth consultations to small businesses in our community.

“It’s great to see Community Futures Peterborough mark 40 years of dedicated service to our local economy,” says Dave Smith, MPP for Peterborough—Kawartha. “Their ongoing commitment to empowering entrepreneurs and fostering small business growth has been instrumental in creating and maintaining thousands of jobs right here in our community. This milestone is a testament to the hard work and vision of everyone involved, past and present, at CFP.”

The AGM also featured an exciting pop-up market with local 2024 and 2025 Starter Company Plus clients, including the National Touring Museum, Groovy Little Smoothie, and The Doggery, and a lunch reception catered by Starter Company Plus Graduates, Electric City Catering, Pies by Zach, and On Point Custom Catering.

“Celebrating 40 years is more than a milestone, it’s a testament to the dedication, resilience, and impact of Community Futures Peterborough,” says Wayne Harding, Board Chair. “We’ve helped countless entrepreneurs turn dreams into reality, and as we look ahead, we’re more committed than ever to driving local economic growth and empowering the next generation of business leaders.”

Community Futures Peterborough Announces Six Local Youth Startups in the Summer Company Program

Peterborough, ON – June 18, 2025 – Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre is excited to announce the launch of their first ever Summer Company Program, a signature initiative of the Government of Ontario that supports the entrepreneurial aspirations of youth aged 15 to 29. Each year, the program provides eligible young people with up to $3,000 in grant funding to start and operate a business over the summer months. In addition to funding, participants benefit from comprehensive business training, expert advice, and personalized mentorship to help turn their ideas into real-world enterprises.

This year’s intake saw a record number of applications from across the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County, a clear indication of the growing momentum for youth entrepreneurship in the region. From this highly competitive pool, six standout young entrepreneurs have been selected to receive funding and mentorship through the program.

This summer’s participants are Lauren Connolly, Teaghan Hartnett, Haydon Meade, Neha Mervin, Bisma Razaque, and Spencer Toth.

“I love seeing kids grow in their swimming skills and confidence,” said Lauren Connolly, founder of Connolly Swim Academy who hopes to help kids build confidence in the water. “I am really excited to make my business the best it can be for my clients.”

The diverse range of businesses in this group showcases creativity, passion, and entrepreneurial spirit. From a swimming instructor focused on building life-saving skills and confidence in the water, to vibrant Bollywood dance classes that celebrate culture and movement and a custom apparel shop, each business brings something unique to the community. Window washing and landscaping services offer practical support to homeowners and businesses alike, while farm support provides essential help to local agriculture, ensuring our food systems remain strong. Together, these businesses reflect a wide spectrum of industries each making a meaningful impact in its own way.

“Young entrepreneurs are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but they are also bringing fresh ideas to our region,” says Rose Terry, Manager of the Business Advisory Centre and Corporate Communications. “The Summer Company Program is giving these six young entrepreneurs the opportunity to gain practical experience in launching and operating a business, while also equipping them with confidence, mentorship, and the skills they need to succeed beyond the program. We’re proud to lead a program that changes lives.”

Allison Adam, Entrepreneurship Officer at Community Futures Peterborough has been leading the program since May.

“You can really see their confidence build as they take charge of their ideas. It’s not about having everything figured out. It’s about making progress, staying curious, and being willing to try.”

Youth entrepreneurship is on the rise across the province and the country. In Ontario, young people under the age of 30 now make up nearly 12 percent of all self-employed individuals, according to recent provincial labour statistics. Nationally, more than half of young Canadians have considered launching a business at some point, highlighting an appetite for independence and impact. A recent study by the Business Development Bank of Canada also revealed that strong mentorship and thorough business planning are two of the most critical success factors for new entrepreneurs, both of which are central pillars of the Summer Company experience.

“The Summer Company Program is a cornerstone for fostering innovation right here in Peterborough,” says Dave Smith, MPP for Peterborough-Kawartha. “This initiative, supported by our government, is designed to equip aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools they need to succeed. The combination of financial support, expert guidance, and mentorship gives them a crucial head start. I’m incredibly proud to see their fresh ideas taking root and contributing to a dynamic future for our local economy.”

The Summer Company Program remains vital for developing the next generation of business leaders in our region.

This initiative will provide hands-on, experiential education to aspiring entrepreneurs in agriculture through workshops and guided tours of established farms.

“Farms at Work is grateful to receive this Community Advancement Program funding to support planning of our long-envisioned Community Learning Farm. These funds, along with in-kind support from the Peterborough County Economic Development team and farm owner Jason McIntosh, bring the dream of a place to farm closer for aspiring farmers and will benefit the community for many years to come,” said Heather Thoma, operations manager for Farms at Work. “We welcome community participation – whether as volunteers, food growers looking for land and educational support, or benefactors.”

The New Canadians Centre will use the funding to advance the goals of the Workplace Inclusion Charter, which include fostering a welcoming and inclusive community, supporting employee attraction and retention, boosting productivity and innovation, and enhancing overall employee well-being.

Community Futures Peterborough and the County of Peterborough Partner to Deliver Entrepreneurship 101 Workshop Series Across the County

Peterborough, ON — April 17, 2025 — Community Futures Peterborough, in collaboration with the County of Peterborough, is proud to announce the launch of the first-ever Entrepreneurship 101 workshop series this spring to be held exclusively in the County of Peterborough. Tailored for aspiring, new, and existing business owners, this four-part series will bring essential small business education in person to rural communities in the County of Peterborough.

“Rural entrepreneurs are the backbone of our local economy, but they often face unique challenges when it comes to accessing in-person resources and support,” says Devon Girard, Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough. “By bringing Entrepreneurship 101 directly to communities across the County of Peterborough, we’re making it easier for business owners to gain the knowledge and connections they need to succeed — right in their own backyard.”

With workshops scheduled in Millbrook, Havelock, Selwyn, and Norwood throughout May and June, participants will gain practical knowledge on critical topics including business planning, branding, and marketing, cash flow management, and how to access financial support. This hands-on series is designed to empower rural entrepreneurs with tools and insights to start, sustain, and grow their businesses right in their communities.

“Peterborough County is pleased that Community Futures Peterborough is delivering these critical entrepreneurial workshops throughout the County as one more tool to support our small business community.   Investing in these workshops is like planting seeds for future growth and resilience.  They empower entrepreneurs to not just survive, but thrive, in an ever-changing world,” said Peterborough County Warden Bonnie Clark.

Recent data highlights the importance of initiatives like this as nearly 28% of all Canadian small businesses are in rural areas, yet rural entrepreneurs report greater barriers to financing, mentorship, and market access compared to their urban counterparts. Programs that reduce travel time and build local networks are crucial for their success.

“I’m excited to bring this kind of support closer to rural entrepreneurs,” said Rose Terry, Manager of the Business Advisory Centre and Corporate Communications. “We’re helping to reduce barriers and build stronger local networks where entrepreneurs can grow and support each other.”

The Entrepreneurship 101 series welcomes participants from all stages of business and will feature interactive sessions led by experienced business advisors. Whether you’re validating a new idea or looking to grow an existing operation, these workshops offer valuable insights and community connections to help you thrive.

“Entrepreneurial workshop training isn’t just about sharpening skills—it’s about unlocking potential. Rural small business owners are the heartbeat of the community, driving innovation and growth,” says Rhonda Keenan, Economic Development General Manager of Peterborough County. “Participating in these workshops is an investment not only for business, but in the future of our community.”

New Toolkit Launched to Support Local Businesses with Advice on Managing Tariff Risks

Peterborough, ON – April 9, 2025 – In response to the ongoing trade challenges posed by United States tariffs, Community Futures Peterborough, in collaboration with the Business Advisory Centre, the City of Peterborough, the County of Peterborough, the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA), and Peterborough + the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, has launched the Tariff Toolkit—a strategic resource to support businesses in our community.

The evolving trade landscape between Canada and the United States has created uncertainty for local businesses. With tariffs and counter-tariffs shifting frequently, businesses need actionable strategies to navigate these challenges effectively. On March 4, Community Futures Peterborough and its partners came together at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre to connect businesses with industry experts who provided initial guidance on minimizing the impact of tariffs. While the specifics of the tariffs may change, the need for businesses to rethink their approach to trade remains constant.

“We have always been mindful of not only the direct impacts tariffs themselves have on businesses but also tariff speculation and lasting change in consumer buying patterns. Those are the effects our area businesses are feeling right now”, says Devon Girard, executive director of Community Futures Peterborough.

“Businesses have the opportunity to thrive when the marketplace is stable and predictable.  The unpredictability thrust on the global market by the Republican Administration in the United States has placed us in an unstable situation that is difficult for any industry to navigate.  Initiatives like the Tariff Toolkit from Community Futures provide our local job creators with some tools to help them navigate this uncertain time and find ways to better position themselves to have the resilience needed to successfully navigate the choppy waters and come out stronger,” said Dave Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament, Peterborough – Kawartha.

The Tariff Toolkit is designed as a practical resource to help businesses assess their current trade strategies and explore new opportunities. This guide offers insights and actionable steps that businesses can work on with their advisors to develop a resilient approach to international trade.

“Our businesses are the backbone of our local economy – employing our friends, families, and neighbours, while producing high-quality goods and services. Tariffs and global uncertainty are taking a toll and having an impact on our businesses,” said Peterborough County Warden Bonnie Clark.  “This toolkit is designed to strengthen small businesses as they work through these imposed tariffs and consider diversifying their strategies, products, and services.”

“The tariffs imposed and threatened by the United States are a significant threat to businesses in Peterborough. Our local businesses play a critical role in our community, and the City of Peterborough is committed to working to protect and support our local economy,” said Peterborough City Mayor Jeff Leal. “I want to sincerely thank Community Futures Peterborough for putting together this excellent resource to help Peterborough businesses navigate this challenging situation.”

“Downtown businesses are navigating an increasingly complex trade environment, and the Tariff Toolkit arrives at a critical time. It equips our businesses with the practical strategies and expert insights they need to adapt, stay competitive, and build long-term resilience. We’re proud to support this initiative and ensure our local business community has every opportunity to thrive—no matter the global challenges,” says Nour Mazloum, Executive Director of the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA).

The Tariff Toolkit offers businesses guidance in key areas, including understanding the financial impact of tariffs, identifying alternative sourcing strategies, expanding customer bases beyond tariff-affected regions, mitigating financial exposure through hedging and risk management, repositioning brand messaging in response to trade shifts, and leveraging local and international partnerships to drive growth. It is available to all businesses in the City and County of Peterborough.

Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre Launches First Summer Company Program

Peterborough, ON – March 10, 2025 – The 2025 Summer Company Program is now accepting applications, offering students the tools, guidance, and funding needed to transform their business ideas into reality. This program empowers youth to explore entrepreneurship and develop the skills to succeed in today’s fast-paced economy. Applications are open until May 16, 2025.

Six successful applicants will gain access to expert mentoring, valuable resources, and financial support, including a grant of up to $3,000 to kickstart their small business. The program provides an unparalleled opportunity for participants to build critical entrepreneurial skills while running their own businesses during the summer months.

“This program is about empowering young people with the confidence, resources, and connections they need to turn their ideas into reality,” said Devon Girard, Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough. “The support provided ensures participants are equipped with the tools to succeed and create a strong foundation for their future.”

Entrepreneurial skills are more important than ever in today’s rapidly changing economy. According to a recent report by Statistics Canada, over 20% of young Canadians aged 18-24 have expressed an interest in starting their own business, yet many cite a lack of resources, mentorship, and funding as barriers to entry. Programs like Summer Company play a critical role in addressing these challenges, equipping participants with essential skills like problem-solving, financial literacy, and marketing expertise. These competencies not only help young entrepreneurs launch successful businesses but also prepare them to adapt and thrive in any career they pursue.

The program offers a small, close-knit group of students the chance to receive personalized, one-on-one guidance and mentorship from an experienced advisor with extensive expertise in the entrepreneurial space.

Applicants must be between 15 and 29 years old, returning to school in the fall of 2025, or hold full-time employment during the program.

The Summer Company Program has a proven track record of success, having supported hundreds of young entrepreneurs across Ontario. Past participants have created diverse businesses in fields like technology, creative arts, food services, and retail.

“This is an exciting opportunity for young people to explore entrepreneurship at an early stage,” said Rose Terry, Business Advisory Centre Manager. “By giving students the tools, funding, and mentorship they need to create their own jobs, we’re not just helping them succeed for one summer—we’re empowering them to have the confidence to pursue entrepreneurship as a viable career path.   Many participants catch the ‘entrepreneurship bug’ and go on to become business leaders and changemakers in their communities. It’s amazing to see how this program sparks creativity in young minds.”

Applications are open now through May 16, 2025. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit www.cfpeterborough.ca for full program details and the online application form. For additional information, contact Lindsey Irwin at lindsey@cfpeterborough.ca.

Experts to Lead Panel Event for Businesses on Future-Proofing Your Business Against U.S. Tariffs

Experts to Lead Panel Event for Businesses on Future-Proofing Your Business Against U.S. Tariffs

Peterborough, ON – February 13, 2025 – Business owners across Peterborough City and County are invited to attend Bridging the Divide: Future-Proofing Your Business Against U.S. Tariffs, a free event designed to help local businesses navigate the challenges posed by shifting trade policies. Hosted by Community Futures Peterborough, the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, and the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area, this event will provide expert insights into supply chain management, finance, and trade strategies.

On Tuesday, March 4, at Market Hall in Peterborough, the event will open its doors at 8:00 AM, allowing attendees to network over food and drinks before programming begins at 8:30 AM. The panel discussion will focus on the impact of U.S. tariffs, changes in consumer buying habits, and effective strategies for businesses to mitigate risks and adapt to new trade realities.

“The impact of U.S. tariffs is being felt across our region, and business owners are facing new challenges that require immediate attention,” says Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough, Devon Girard. “We recognized the urgency of this issue and felt it was essential to bring together experts in trade, supply chain management, and finance to provide actionable insights. This panel is a direct response to the concerns we’ve heard from local businesses, and we’re committed to equipping them with the knowledge and strategies they need to navigate these changes successfully.”

The event will begin with opening remarks from Devon Girard of Community Futures Peterborough, Joel Wiebe of the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, and County of Peterborough Warden Bonnie Clark. A panel will feature industry experts including Bob Armstrong, President of Armstrong Trade and Logistics Advisory Services, Andrea Parkes, Professor of Supply Chain at Fleming College, and Sherry Hill, CFO of Peterboro Matboards and Secretary of the Kawartha Manufacturers Association.

Keynote speaker, Bob Armstrong, CITP, FCILT, President of Armstrong Trade and Logistics Advisory Services Inc. (ATLAS) brings unparalleled expertise to the region. He has more than 50 years of experience in Global Supply Chain, International Trade, Cross-Border Logistics, and Customs Regulations, and has led numerous global trade missions. He previously served as President of the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Canada, President and CEO of the Canadian Association of Importers and Exporters Inc., and President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC). His extensive experience includes helping Canadian businesses find new suppliers and customers while ensuring cost-effective, efficient, and resilient supply chain operations in global markets.

“Canada’s supply chains are critical to our country’s economic success but are under constant upheaval due to the complexity of the supply chain, consumers changing purchasing habits, government interventions, wars and labour shortages,” says Armstrong. “Our largest trade flows are South-North-South with our largest trading partner the USA. Will we see a new, larger flow of goods across Canada east to west, west to east as Canadians trade more with each other? Will Canada increase its exports and imports with the Far East and the EU? That can change supply chain patterns too,” he added.

Throughout the discussion, panelists will explore key topics such as how tariffs are disrupting supply chains, strategies for diversifying suppliers, the impact of trade barriers on local businesses, and new market opportunities for Canadian exporters. Local business owners will also share firsthand experiences on how tariffs are affecting their operations and what steps they are taking to adapt in our rapidly changing environment.

“Our local economy is disrupted,” says Joel Wiebe, Vice President, Government Relations and Operations at the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce. “Peterborough sells more than $580 million in goods to the US and businesses here rely on American companies for the goods and materials they produce and sell. This is an opportunity to address the risks in our supply chain.”

The conversation will examine how Canadian businesses can effectively engage with policymakers, the role of contract clauses in tariff agreements, and how to successfully build supplier relationships in today’s rapidly changing trade environment.  Registration for the event can be found on www.cfpeterborough.ca
